The rule: change one thing, not three

A set reads as a set when the images share everything except one variable. Same palette, same size, same treatment — and only the composition changes. Or: same composition, same size, and only the colour shifts. The moment two things change at once, the eye stops reading a series and starts reading a collection.

This is why buying three prints you separately liked almost never works, and why three prints from the same palette almost always does.

Why three, rather than two or four

Two prints create a symmetry that needs a centre — a bed, a fireplace, a console — or it looks unresolved. Three has a middle of its own, so it works above furniture and on a bare wall alike. Four reads as a grid, which is a different and more formal look that wants equal gaps and real precision to pull off.

Spacing and span

Gaps of 5 to 8 cm between frames. Tighter than that and they merge; wider and they separate. Three A2s with 6 cm gaps span about 138 cm, which is the right width above a standard three-seater. Three A3s span about 101 cm, right above a sideboard or a two-seater. Three A4s span about 75 cm — a hallway or a narrow wall.

Hang to a common centre line at about 145 cm from the floor, not to a common top edge. The full working is on the set of three prints page.
