Colour
White wall art, on a wall that is already white.
This is the one request that can fail completely. A pale print on a pale wall can be invisible from the doorway — and you only find out once it is hanging.

Three ways to make white read
- A hard edge somewhere. One line, one dark mark, one block that is not white. The eye needs an anchor; the rest of the picture can be as pale as you like once it has one.
- Tonal range within the white. Chalk against bone against oyster is still “white” to most people, but it gives the print internal shadow. A single flat white does not.
- A frame that is not white. Oak, black or brass draws the boundary that the artwork itself refuses to. This is the cheapest of the three fixes.
Warm white and cool white are different colours
Most Australian interior walls are a warm off-white — the Dulux Natural White family and its equivalents. Put a cool, blue-leaning white print on one and the print reads grey and slightly dirty. It is not the print; it is the pairing. Hold the paper against the wall in daylight before committing, and if you cannot, choose the warmer of two options.
Where white art actually earns its place
A busy room. If the sofa is patterned, the rug is loud and the shelves are full, white art is the only thing that will not add to the argument. It is also the right choice above a bed where you want the wall to recede rather than perform.
Where it does not work: a large empty wall in a room with nothing else going on. There, white art reads as an unfinished wall rather than a decision. Use black and white instead — same restraint, but it holds the space.

Or match it to your actual room
Photograph the wall and the matcher reads the real colours out of it — then shows you prints in those, and lets you hang one on your own wall before you buy.
