Buying · Custom
Custom wall art, and what it honestly costs.
There are three things people mean by custom, and they differ by about two thousand dollars.
Commissioned original work
An artist makes a one-off piece to your brief. In Australia this realistically starts around $800 for a small work from an emerging artist and runs well past $5,000. You get something nobody else has, a relationship with the artist, and a wait of weeks to months. It is the right answer for a significant wall and a real budget, and Artsby does not do it.
Personalised print
A template with your names, dates, coordinates or a map on it. Cheap, quick, widely available, and genuinely lovely as a gift. It is not really custom art — it is a well-made template with your data in it, and it is worth knowing that going in.
Generated to your room's colours
This is the one Artsby does, and it costs nothing. Photograph the wall, or the sofa, or the cushions — whatever the art has to live with. The tool reads the actual colours out of the photo, down to the hex value, and generates artwork in exactly those colours, in a style you pick. You can then drag it onto a photo of your own wall and resize it before deciding anything.
The honest limits: it generates abstract and stylised work, not portraits and not your pet. A text-to-image model cannot draw an animal it has never seen, so anything claiming to make a portrait of your dog from a description is producing a generic dog in your colours. The images come out at screen resolution, which is why they are offered as a free preview and a prompt you can take elsewhere rather than as something to print at A1 — the resolution maths is on the print resolution page.
What it is good for: deciding what you actually want before you spend anything, and finding which existing prints are already in your colours.
From the collection
Drawn for Artsby and printed in Australia on heavyweight matte poster paper, delivery included.
The shop isn't open yet. Prints are made to order by an Australian printer and the catalogue is being finalised — match your room in the meantime and we'll have something in your colours.
Start from your own room instead
Photograph the wall. The matcher reads the real colours out of the photo, shows you prints in those colours, and lets you hang one on your own wall before you decide.
